Valvular Heart Disease

Here at Stanford, we use a multi-disciplinary approach to diagnosing and treating patients with valvular heart disease. We aim to repair, rather than replace heart valves whenever possible.

Care and Treatment of Valvular Heart Disease

Treatments

Treatment varies, depending on the type of valvular heart disease. In some cases, medication alone is successful in the treatment of valvular heart disease. In cases of high risk patients with valvular heart disease, we use a multi-disciplinary approach to diagnosing and treating these patients.

Aortic valve surgery

Surgery to repair or replace an aortic valve that is not working correctly.

Balloon aortic valvuloplasty

A method used to temporarily relieve aortic stenosis (narrowing of the aortic valve) by inflating a balloon within the narrowed valve.

Balloon mitral valvuloplasty

A procedure to thread a balloon into the heart through the femoral vein in the groin to improve blood flow across the mitral valve.

Balloon valvuloplasty

A surgical procedure that utilizes a small balloon to open or widen a narrowed heart valve, without need for open heart surgery.

Heart valve replacement

Surgery to repair or replace a heart valve.

Mitral valve repair surgery

Surgical repair or replacement of the heart's mitral valve.

Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR)

A less invasive procedure for patients with severe aortic stenosis, using an artificial aortic valve.

Tricuspid valve surgery

Surgical treatment to repair or replace the tricuspid valve.

Valvular surgery

Heart valve surgery used to repair or replace diseased heart valves.
