As one of the few hypertension programs certified by the American Society of Hypertension (ASH) on the West Coast and the only one in Northern California, we go beyond the standard care to find an appropriate treatment for your unique needs.
We bring together in-depth expertise in nephrology, neurology, sleep medicine, radiology, surgery, endocrinology, and cardiology to diagnose and treat a range of conditions that can cause, or exacerbate, hypertension.
Our doctors specialize in the treatment of all forms of hypertension, including resistant hypertension and other hard-to-treat conditions. We also treat patients under the age of 30 with early-onset resistant hypertension.
- Secondary hypertension: type of high blood pressure in which an often treatable condition causes the problem, including:
- Hyperaldosteronism
- Chronic kidney disease
- Pheochromocytoma
- Renovascular disease
- Hyperthyroidism
- Hyperparathyroidism
- Autonomic dysfunction
- Coarction of the aorta
- Cushing's disease
- Genetic conditions
- Renal (kidney) disorders
- Sleep-related breathing disorders
- Resistant (severe)hypertension: high blood pressure that is routinely uncontrolled despite taking medications
- Gestational hypertension: development of new high blood pressure while pregnant
- Renal hypertension: high blood pressure due to narrowing of the arteries that carry blood to the kidneys
- Masked hypertension: when blood pressure appears under control in a clinical setting, but home blood pressure readings are above the normal range
- Medication-induced hypertension: high blood pressure caused by using a chemical substance, drug, or medication
- Nocturnal hypertension: high blood pressure during sleep
- Neurogenic hypertension: high blood pressure caused by disorders of the sympathetic nervous system
- Salt-sensitive hypertension: high blood pressure caused by a sensitivity to salt in the diet
Our hypertension team is nationally-recognized as thought leaders in all aspects of hypertension treatment. Our doctors regularly care for challenging cases of chronic and resistant hypertension. Our goal is to move research discoveries into new diagnostic and treatment options and to bring these latest therapies to you.
Our team spends the time to understand why you have high blood pressure and how it affects your health. To develop a care plan targeted to your needs, we bring together a range of diagnostic methods, including lab tests, genetic testing, and advanced imaging technologies, to identify the type and root causes of your hypertension.
HEART DISEASE IS PREVENTABLE.
Treatments
In many cases, we can effectively treat you with established treatment approaches. We also offer expertise and new options for treating high blood pressure that has not responded to existing treatments.
Lifestyle and Medication
For individuals with chronic or resistant hypertension, we start with the least invasive options first. These include:
- Adjustments to current medications
- Lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise, stress management and smoking cessation
Treatment for Primary Condition
Some individuals have a type of high blood pressure called secondary hypertension, in which an often treatable primary condition causes the problem.
Our multidisciplinary team knows how to identify these underlying conditions and can help devise a plan to target your hypertension at its source.
Renal Denervation
Renal denervation is a new treatment for resistant hypertension that targets the nerves near the kidneys responsible for regulating blood pressure. This minimally invasive procedure is currently in clinical trials. Our program is the only West Coast participant in this trial.
Sleep Medicine
There's a strong link between severe hypertension and untreated obstructive sleep apnea, which is caused by a complete or partial obstruction of the upper airway. Our sleep medicine experts can help identify if individuals have sleep apnea, and provide a treatment plan to minimize their risk of elevated blood pressure.
Personal Data Tracking
Through Stanford's MyHealth patient portal, individuals can securely transmit home blood pressure readings, heart rate, and body weight to providers. These readings then become integrated into the patient's electronic health records for more accurate, convenient, personalized diagnostics and assessment of treatment efficacy.
Clinical Trials
Our highly skilled doctors participate in clinical and device trials (including renal denervation trials) to advance treatment for difficult to control or resistant hypertension.
Open trials refer to studies currently recruiting participants or that may recruit participants in the near future. Closed trials are not currently enrolling, but similar studies may open in the future.

Advanced Practice Providers
Many members of your team have undergone additional training and education to deliver some of the same care as doctors. They work closely with your surgeon or nephrologist.
Our physician assistant (PA) can help diagnose hypertension. PAs also work closely with patients to help them control their blood pressure and assist with any changes in managing their hypertension between appointments.
Nursing professionals manage all your care, including appointment coordination, sharing your test results, and providing treatment. They also provide support and education so you and your family fully understand your care plan.
Research nurse coordinators screen candidates who are eligible and willing to participate in our clinical research studies. They educate you about the process you will experience during the study and answer your questions.
