Biography
Edward E. Manche, MD is Professor of Ophthalmology and Director of the Cornea and Refractive Surgery Service at Stanford University School of Medicine. He received his medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine and completed residency training at the University of Medicine and Dentistry at New Jersey where he served as Chief Resident. He completed a two-year fellowship in Cornea and Refractive Surgery at the Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA.
Dr. Manche is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and received its Achievement Award in 2003 and its Senior Achievement Award in 2014. He was elected to active membership in the American Ophthalmological Society in 2011, and is recognized in Best Doctors in America and Guide to America's Top Physicians. He serves on the editorial boards of the American Journal of Ophthalmology, Journal of Ophthalmology, Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology and Journal of Refractive Surgery.
He lectures widely on topics in cornea and refractive surgery and has published over 130 peer-reviewed articles and 30 book chapters.

Dr. Manche I would say is "famed" in his role as the Director of the Stanford Eye Institute. He is simply best in class, period. From medical knowledge to bedside manner - there can be no better. Stanford is so very lucky to have this huge Renaissance man asset in this role. I constantly refer to him and in fact carry his business cards with me........he is that good and famed in his field.

I would highly recommend Dr. Manche for anyone thinking of corrective eye surgery! He was the second provider I visited for a consultation and I was so glad I had taken the time to see him. He explained that the treatment recommendation given by the first consulting doctor at a different, non-Stanford practice, was not correct, and that it would not have worked well for me. He gave me the reasons why. Without his guidance, I could have made a big mistake. He also took time to explain the procedure and set my expectations. Coincidentally, I have a friend who also had PRK done in Colorado during the same time, and her doctor did not give her the amount of information Dr. Manche provided to me. As a result, she was extremely disappointed. Everything Dr. Manche explained and predicted throughout my PRK journey was accurate. I couldn't be happier.

I do wish that the care providers washed their hands before touching me. I know that in an eye clinic, it might not seem as important as other areas, but it would make me feel better to see the clinician wash their hands with soap before sticking their hands on my face and/or eye. I am very pleased with seeing how the nurse/assistants cleaned all the machines with alcohol before they used them on me.
Dr. Manche was great. During my initial screening assessment, I wished I had spent more time prior thinking of exhaustive questions to ask. I ended up doing quite a bit of research between my assessment and the actual procedure, even if it was only 6 days between each. I was mentally prepared for the recovery period, but I do think Dr. Manche needs to ensure that future patients are just as aware, as the recovery duration might be taken for granted by some who don't do their research and just jump into getting the procedure done thinking that it is similar to lasik. During all of my visits, Dr. Manche was attentive and always answered all of my questions in a professional and caring manner, so I was entirely satisfied with all of my visits.
I asked plenty of questions regarding treatment, procedure, recovery, etc-all questions were answered and I was able to move through various stages of treatment with no anxiety or concerns.
Overall, excellent experience. one thing I would mention is that if you could tell patients that after they stop using the drops that their vision would become less blurry and heal faster, that would help quell some anxiety. I thought the using the drops would make my vision less blurry and was a bit nervous that after a month my vision was still a bit hazy.

Sometimes I would ask questions and he would respond with, "You don't really want to know the complexity of it all." It would have been nice if he could summarize the response in a few laymens term sentences to answer my question, rather than disregard it.

I had a LOT of questions, and both Dr. Manche and Dr. Roe were patient and informative, giving me detailed explanations and spending a lot of time to ensure all of my questions were addressed and all of my options were thoroughly and completely explained. I'm not just choosing "Very Good" by default-I actually MEAN it. That high of a rating across the board is exceptionally rare from me. I cannot think of a single thing either Dr. Roe or Dr. Manche could have done better during our visit.

Dr Manche was much more concerned with his documentation than he was for me. when I was talking to him about my concerns and asking for his advice, he was looking at the computer/paperwork and typing on the computer. He didn't even act like he cared. I was really hurt.

They told me their honest and professional, opinion on my condition even when that meant I was not a good candidate for Lasix and would need no further treatment for the center.
Pretty much my entire experience was exceptional. The one thing I might add is that the medication guidance differed slightly from the pharmacist to the nurse to Dr. Manche himself - for one of the eye drops, the pharmacist said 4 times a day and Dr. Manche said 6. But these were minor variations, and likely inconsequential.

On checkout I was provided the medication and follow-up instructions at the front desk, so the physician did not actually provide them to me or provide any counseling about them.

Great service. Answered all my questions. Knowledgeable about all my questions. The only feedback I have is about the prescription for painkillers post-op. I was told to take the prescription as needed but when I did, the dosage was too high and I ended up feeling very sick for days. That was okay because the nurse said I could take half as much. However, they did not necessarily warn me about the sickness that I could experience. If I had known of the potential negative effects, I would have been more cautious about taking the regular amount instead of little by little.

My visits to Dr. Manche's office have been the best experience I have had at a doctor's office in 15 years. Everyone, from the receptionist to the Dr, were incredibly helpful and friendly. Dr. Manche and his PA's take the time to answer your questions, even though I'm sure it's the thousandth time they've been asked them. It's the first time for me and they seem to get that. They're incredibly patient and take the time to make sure that you're completely comfortable and you understand what's going on.
