Biography

Food has always been a big part of my life. Imagine what life would be like if eating made you sick? Because we need food to survive and we are social creatures who revolve much of our lives around food, not being able to eat impacts physical, mental and social well-being. It is this intricate interconnection between the brain and the gut which drew me to the field of Neurogastroenterology & Motility. Disorders affecting the function of the gastrointestinal tract can lead to a variety of disorders, including gastroparesis, functional dyspepsia and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). My research includes understanding the role/impact of physiologic testing on clinical care, exploring novel therapies for gastroparesis and expanding the role of neuromodulation in the treatment of GI motility disorders and pain. I am also interested in understanding overlapping conditions such as chronic fatigue syndrome and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome as it relates to pathophysiology and impact on gastrointestinal symptoms and outcomes. As part of this interest, I have served on two ad-hoc committees for the National Academy of Science (Institute of Medicine): “Development of a Consensus Case Definition for Chronic Multisystem Illness in 1990-1991 Gulf War Veterans” and “Health Care Utilization and Adults with Disabilities”. I strive to improve quality of life for patients and health care providers through development of mindfulness, resilience, engagement and advocacy.

Both were careful to explain fully the implications of their decisions and the next steps I should take, depending on any changes in my condition. Scheduling a video visit with the GI team regularly every 3 months has been very productive because I can adjust medication as needed and address my concerns, which is necessary since I have a complicated medical history with multiple medical issues.

Dr. Nguyen has truly played one of the most essential roles in the management of my complex condition, and has been an incredible resource since the first day we met. I came to her over 6 years, in a critical & fragile state, and had little hope at that moment in time that I would even see a future (for my condition was rapidly declining and my previous medical team was unable to identify the problem or lacked the tools/resources to treat me). She was the first physician (in over 20 years!) who truly understood the complexity of my disease, and not only saught out to treat my current symptoms, but most importantly, began searching and evaluating the underlying cause(s). Her knowledge base was profound, and when she felt I needed the expertise and knowledge of other practitioners to address the other areas of the body that were affected by my condition, she did not hesitate to get them involved. She has not let one stone go unturned, and I know she will continue to search out new treatments, resources and options as they become available, and as my status continues to change. I became ill at the young age of 17, and I am now almost 40....Dr. Nguyen and the team at Stanford, have truly provided more answers and have offered/given access to more resources than any other group of physicians/health practitioners/hospital teams that I have worked with in the 15+ years prior (and Stanford has been an institution incomparable to any I have experienced in this country thus far!). Dr Nguyen has always taken the time to listen to my concerns, and has never dismissed my thoughts, questions or personal desires when determining our treatment plan (which is so appreciated!!). I was just diagnosed with gastroparesis. She quickly asked about symptoms and provided medication for that. She answered most of my questions but we didn't get to discuss too much about next steps or what I can expect and how to deal with new condition. I did have lots of questions (to be fair) but traveling 2 hours each way for an appt. you hope for more time to understand & deal with this new condition. The doctor was very good at answering what questions we did have time for.

Doctor seems intelligent, but was very rushed & most of the appointment was with the fellow & NP. Didn't have enough time for all my questions or to review the treatments suggested. I didn't get a full understanding of why certain medications/treatments were being suggested or how they would work (or if there are any conflicts with the medicines I already take). Also, doctor didn't/was unable to tell me what my problem is/define the diagnosis.
