Biography

Dr. Stankovic is an ear and skull base surgeon trained at Harvard and an auditory neuroscientist trained at Massachusetts Institute to Technology. She serves as the Bertarelli Foundation Professor and Chair of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery. She is also a professor, by courtesy, of Neurosurgery.

Dr. Stankovic blends her surgical expertise with training in physics, molecular biology, auditory neuroscience, and systems electrophysiology. This multidisciplinary background enables her to devise uniquely effective solutions tailored to the unmet needs of those with hearing loss.

As the director of the Stanford Medicine Molecular Neurotology Laboratory, her research focuses on overcoming the challenges posed by the small size and complex three-dimensional structure of the inner ear. Her approach is further enhanced by collaborations with international leaders in ultra-low-power electronics and nonlinear optics.

Dr. Stankovic has published her research in some of the most prestigious medical and scientific journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, Nature Biotechnology, Science Translational Medicine, Nature Communications, Nature Protocols, and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Her publications cover a range of topics, including advancements in the diagnosis and management of vestibular schwannoma, high-resolution imaging of the inner ear, gene therapy and drug repurposing for hearing loss, energy extraction from the inner ear to power electronics, development of human cellular models of hearing loss, and innovations in cranial nerve stimulation, including next-generation cochlear implants.

She has been recognized by the American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, the American Otological Society, the United States Department of Defense, the National Organization for Hearing Research, and the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communications Disorders for her leadership in clinical care, research, and education.

Dr. Stankovic is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine, the Collegium Oto-Rhino-Laryngologicum Amicitiae Sacrum, and the American Otological Society. She is also a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Neurotology Society, and a former president of the American Auditory Society.

I am grateful to have such an esteemed caring doctor researcher! Thank you for listening to me as a patient who has an acoustic neuroma. Post Cyber Knife, I continue to have constant right-sided headaches, full head feelings, strong grinding tinnitus, dizzy balance, hearing loss, etc. in daily life as my post CK normal. It was the October 2025 vertigo that would not stop and the sudden hearing loss that are not my normal. The MRI you referred to (April 2025) showed no tumor growth, and I understand that you do not expect tumor growth to be the cause. You were not concerned that the AN is part of mosaic NF2. You did not present a possible cause of the vertigo or attribute it to LPR. You do not expect the vertigo to be recurring. These statements help me. Thank you for your kind attention.

This was my second video visit with Dr. Stankovic and it went very well. She explained things thoroughly and showed a considerable amount of kindness and compassion. I have complicated conditions as a result of an unusual event and sought her guidance in person after three difficult and challenging years for which treatments, including medications, a procedure and surgery, were unsuccessful. As a resident of Minnesota, this trip was well worth it. I now understand why these ear conditions happened and also have a diagnosis. An elective surgery as treatment is still uncertain, but I do know this â€¦ my best chance of improvement will occur with her help. Dr. Stankovic is an exceptional doctor who truly cares about my well-being.

Dr. Stankovic is an excellent doctor who listens closely and shares information clearly. I had hoped she would provide a new perspective with different ideas for my complicated condition of three years which she did. Her recommendations included a diagnostic procedure that can be duplicated by my neurotologist here plus supplement and medication adjustments. I appreciate that she didnâ€™t prescribe meds that are commonly prescribed for my condition but have adverse side effects. Perhaps I will be a beneficiary of her research on tinnitus and hearing loss. Stanford is fortunate to have such an exemplary doctor and researcher as Dr. Stankovic.
