Intravenous (IV) Fluid Shortage
Updated on 12/09/2024
Hurricane Helene damaged a Baxter International facility in September. They are a major IV fluids producer. This has caused a nationwide shortage of the fluids they make.
Here’s what you need to know:
- Patient care and safety is our top priority.
- All patients who need IV fluids and dialysis solutions receive them.
- We are managing our supply and have plans if supplies get low.
- Most care is not affected.
What are IV fluids?
IV fluids are liquids given into a person's veins through a small tube called a catheter. They are used to quickly hydrate patients, provide nutrients, and deliver medicine.
Are there other ways patients can get the fluids and medicines they need?
Often patients can get the fluids and medicines they need in other ways. This may include:
- drinking fluids.
- using oral electrolyte replacements.
- taking medicines that do not need IV fluids.
Your care team will let you know what fluids and medicines you need.
How long will the shortage last?
We expect that the shortage will last at least until the end of December 2024.
Are other hospitals and healthcare systems impacted?
Yes, the IV fluid shortage is nationwide.
