HEALTH ALERT: Severe Pulmonary Injury Associated With Vaping
Since June 2019, there have been reports of at least 20 suspected cases in California of severe acute pulmonary injury in previously healthy adults with a recent history of vaping. Vaping refers to the increasingly popular practice of inhaling vapor from an e-cigarette device, which works by heating a liquid that can contain nicotine, marijuana, or other drugs. The liquids used in e-cigarettes are largely unregulated, and they can contain toxic chemicals that can cause lung damage; the long-term health impacts of vaping are unknown. Nationally, nearly 200 suspected cases have been reported. No suspected cases have been reported to the County of Santa Clara Public Health Department to date. Click here for details.

TJC Message of the Week
Click here for this week’s "Message of the Week.” This is part of our ongoing survey readiness efforts here at SHC. The intent of this message is to provide information on focused topics each week, which are based on previous survey issues and important practice reminders. Please share with your respective staff (in huddles, rounds, meetings and post on your Vis Wall). Thank you in advance for helping SHC to be survey ready.
Required 500P Orientation Now Available
As someone who will be working in the new SHC hospital facility (500P), you are required to complete New Facility Orientation prior to opening. The deadline for completion of this orientation is October 14. You will receive an email message from Healthstream (HS-Alerts) instructing you how to complete this orientation, and you will have multiple options to meet the requirement:
• Online Module: Complete an online module (30 minutes), or
• Walk-through: Register for a general walk-through of the building (60-90 minutes), or
• Grand Rounds: Participate in a Grand Rounds walk-through with your department or division (check with your departmental or divisional leadership to determine if they have made a time available and how to sign up for this), or
• Screening Events: Attend one of several screening events where we will be broadcasting the Healthstream module at 30 minute intervals. There is no need to preregister, attendees can walk-in to grab a bite to eat, watch the module, and continue with their day. Food and beverages will be provided at all events. Details can be found in the flyers attached to this email.
