New Pertussis Test
The Stanford Clinical Microbiology Laboratory plans to switch testing method for Bordetella Pertussis nucleic acid amplification testing from a lab-developed PCR assay to an FDA-cleared DNA Amplification Assay (illumigene® Pertussis). The expected go live date is September 25, 2019. There will be a new order code in EPIC (order code BPERT). The new test will require a new nasopharyngeal sample collection kit using a Copan Liquid Amies Elution Swab (ESwab™) Collection and Transport System (Copan catalog 482C; Lawson Item Number 338191). The new test will have a more rapid sample-to-result turn-around time.
This change is due to discontinuation of reagents used for the lab-developed assay. The new assay has been shown to be highly sensitive and specific. B. parapertussis which causes a pertussis-like illness is not detected by the new Pertussis DNA assay. However, illness caused by B. parapertussis is generally milder than illness caused by B. pertussis because the bacteria do not produce pertussis toxin.
TJC Message of the Week
