SHC developed a "Total Joint Pre-Op Class" in order to educate and set patient expectations regarding preparing and recovering from this type of surgery.
During the hands on class, patients learn about:
Physical and Occupational Therapists conduct a presentation in which they review exercises patients should do to prepare for their upcoming surgery, and also provide an idea of what to expect during their hospital stay as well as upon their return home. The focus is on prevention of injury and the importance of follow-up care for a successful recovery.
The nurse case manager speaks to the group about length of stay, Safe Nursing Facility vs. home, safe transportation home, and follow-up care.
The class concludes with a Q&A session and a tour of the unit.
