We provide information, resources and coordinated care for aging adults, and their families. Through our programs and services, we promote wellness and preventive practices for healthy aging and longevity.
Of course, you want to and need to help. Your best approach is to position yourself as a means of support or a partner, rather than the one in control. In this way you are simply another member of your loved one's health care team.
How you can help: Offer to help only if needed. If your loved one cannot make his or her own medical appointments, help them do so.
Make a list of questions to ask the doctor, so you don't forget to discuss important issues with the doctor.
Inform the doctor ahead of time if you have concerns that your parent may be less than truthful about their health.
Attend the appointment with your parent or loved one, or find someone else who can if you are unable.
Make sure that you understand what the doctor is saying. We encourage you to ask questions until you are sure you understood everything.
Ask for a HIPAA release form so that the doctor can speak to you directly about you parent's health conditions.
Bring a list of medications that your parent is currently taking.
Learn about possible side effects or interactions of any medicine the doctor prescribes.
Promote and encourage your parent or loved one to live a healthy lifestyle, which will help them feel better and can prevent illnesses or injuries. Learn more about healthy aging.
