The Division of Family Planning Services and Research at Stanford University offers comprehensive, compassionate reproductive care for women of all backgrounds. Stanford faculty and staff provide individual care to women in a safe, respectful, supportive and friendly environment. The Family Planning clinic provides family planning services for women who seek birth control options, management of unintended and abnormal pregnancies, contraception for women with complex medical issues, difficult IUD/Implant insertion and removal, and comprehensive abortion care. The Family Planning division is also committed to research, resident physician and fellow training, and education in the field of family planning.
Research projects are continuously being developed and implemented within the Division of Family Planning Services and Research. Past and present research includes evaluating the effectiveness and satisfaction of a levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (IUD) for long-term, reversible contraception. Faculty members within the division have developed a multi-level pregnancy test that is being studied for post-abortion care and among women with on-going pregnancies. Additionally, a dedicated IUD inserter for immediate postpartum IUD insertions is being assessed.
Fellows, residents, and medical students lead a number of research protocols in our clinic and department. These studies include the use of self-administered vaginal gel for pain control in a number of gynecologic procedures (IUD insertions, endometrial biopsies, cervical preparation for second trimester abortion) and immediate contraceptive implant insertion following term delivery.
