The Stanford Headache Clinic treats all types of headaches including migraines, tension headaches, cluster headaches, and hypnic headaches.
The method of treatment used at the Stanford Headache Clinic is a philosophy of headache care. The FAQ attempts to answer the most common questions about best to utilize the treatment method.
Our method of treatment is an approach to headache care that is based on the assumption that there are certain principles shared by all headache sufferers and that when these principles are applied to the specifics of an individual's headache situation, certain treatment options become obvious, and when implemented, prove more effective than any other single approach.
For the majority of headache sufferers, prescription medications are part of the plan. But this is not true for all headache sufferers. The treatment method at the Headache Clinic puts a great deal of emphasis on lifestyle modifications, but to be sure, the method uses every tool in the box, including prescription medications, alternative therapies, complementary medicine, and basic science research. Which elements become part of a specific plan depends on the patient.

While the site is happy to answer general questions about headache, for specific treatment recommendations you need to be evaluated by a headache specialist. This can happen at the Headache Clinic or at a variety of other headache centers across the country.
The treatment method takes a very practical view of headache and focuses on prevention, lifestyle changes, physical therapy, stress management, nutritional counseling and planning for immediate response with appropriate medication when a headache occurs. We discuss any and every modality available to the headache community including herbal and non-prescription supplements, acupuncture, yoga, physical therapy, biofeedback, and cognitive therapies.
