Routine Pregnancy and Prenatal Care
Prenatal testing provides us with information about your baby's health before he or she is born. Some routine tests during pregnancy also check on your health. At your first prenatal visit, we will test you for a number of things, including problems with your blood, signs of infections and whether you are immune to rubella (German measles) and chickenpox.
Throughout your pregnancy, you will undergo screening tests that detect risks for or signs of possible health problems in you or your baby. Based on screening test results, your doctor might suggest further diagnostic tests.
A high risk pregnancy can be caused by conditions you already have or conditions you develop, such as diabetes, cancer, heart disease and autoimmune disease, to name a few. They also include being pregnant with more than one baby, previous problem pregnancies or being over age 35.
If you have a chronic condition, it is important to discuss with your doctor how to minimize your risk before you get pregnant. Once you are pregnant, your health care team will closely monitor your pregnancy.
When you deliver at Stanford Health Care – ValleyCare, your health and comfort and the health of your baby are our top priority. SHC - ValleyCare is the only hospital in the area to offer an OB/GYN on-site 24/7 (a Laborist), who specializes in caring for women in labor and delivering babies. The Laborist is a physician from ValleyCare Physicians Associates.
In an emergency, the moments spent waiting for your own physician to arrive can sometimes feel like hours. Having a highly skilled obstetrician on-site means you will always have direct attention from a physician until your doctor arrives. This adds an extra layer of safety for you and your baby. Once your primary obstetrician arrives, he or she takes over the management of your delivery.
