An epilepsy specialist (or epileptologist) is a doctor who specializes in neurology (brain, spinal cord, and nervous system care), epilepsy, and seizure disorders. These doctors have extensive experience using medications and other nonsurgical options to treat epilepsy and seizures.

Clinical nurse specialists, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants have special training in neurology and care management for people with epilepsy. They have extensive experience in patient care and patient education. They also help manage anti-seizure medications (in collaboration with an epilepsy specialist), and coordinate services for people with epilepsy. Sometimes they participate in research efforts.

Neuroradiologists specialize in interpreting diagnostic imaging of the brain and nervous system. They work behind the scenes to help provide an accurate image of the brain and determine possible causes of seizures.

A neuropsychologist is a licensed clinical psychologist with special training in neurology, psychology, and cognitive function. These doctors help the care team evaluate which parts of the brain are not working optimally and therefore may be involved with the seizures. Neuropsychological testing also can help diagnose depression, anxiety, and other psychological problems.

Neuropsychiatrists are medical doctors who specialize in neurology and psychiatry (evaluation of mental disorders). They treat mental health symptoms related to neurological conditions, including epilepsy. Neuropsychiatrists can help identify past or present stress factors contributing to seizures and related conditions, such as psychiatric nonepileptic seizures. They can provide counseling and prescribe medications for people with epilepsy who also have mental health symptoms, such as anxiety or depression.
