Short Bowel Syndrome Causes
What Causes Short Bowel Syndrome?
The main cause of SBS is having a small bowel that is less than half of normal length.
This can be the result of:
- Surgical removal due to intestinal diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease
- Surgical removal due to injury
- Intestinal defects present at birth (congenital short bowel)
Disease or injury that affects the way your small intestine functions despite a normal length can also cause SBS.
