Digestive Procedure - Botulinum Toxin
What to Expect: Botulinum Toxin Injections
As nationally renowned experts, physicians within our Esophagus Center have advanced training in the anatomy of the esophagus. This helps us deliver injections with a level of precision that few centers in the country can match.
If botulinum toxin injections are right for you, here's what to expect:
- We give you medication to help you relax and not feel pain, but you will be awake for the procedure (conscious sedation).
- Accessing and examining your esophagus with an endoscope, we pinpoint the ideal location for your injections.
- We deliver the injections with the help of a special tool at the tip of the endoscope.
- You may receive up to five injections around the width (circumference) of your esophagus.
- You can expect to go home shortly after your procedure.
- A few weeks after your procedure, we perform special imaging tests, such as esophageal manometry, to see how your esophagus is responding to treatment.
The effects of botulinum toxin injections can be temporary and typically wear off after a few months. You may need additional treatments for long-term relief. You should know that multiple rounds of botulinum toxin injections could make it difficult to perform surgical treatments if you should want or need them later on.
