Epidural Steroid Injection
What Is An Epidural Steroid Injection?
An epidural steroid injection is a nonsurgical procedure that delivers pain-killing medication into a small space in your back or neck.
This treatment is commonly used to relieve pain caused by irritation of nerves in the spine. Conditions treated include:
- Herniated disc
- Pinched nerve
- Spinal stenosis (spinal narrowing)
Epidural steroid injections are very effective at alleviating arm or leg pain caused by a disc herniation.
How long will an epidural steroid injection relieve my pain?
The effects of an epidural steroid injection can vary greatly from person to person. Your results will depend on your specific condition and how your body responds to the medication. It may provide long-term relief, short-term relief, or no relief at all.
Safety of epidural steroid injections
Epidural steroid injections are very safe, but not entirely without risk. Much less than 1% of injections cause serious complications.
