Neuromodulation
Our Approach to Neuromodulation
Much like a cardiac pacemaker corrects an irregular heartbeat, neuromodulation sends mild electrical pulses to nerves to regulate the signals sent to the brain. Some neuromodulation treatments are noninvasive, and others involve minimally invasive procedures to implant devices. Neuromodulation therapy can treat a wide range of conditions including chronic pain, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, incontinence, and depression.
Our neuroscience specialists are recognized for their expertise in neuromodulation. We carefully evaluate you to decide on the right treatment option to relieve your symptoms. We carefully evaluate you to formulate recommended options for treatment, and we monitor your progress to recommend modifications to treatment as your needs change.
What We Offer You for Neuromodulation
- Recognized leadership in neuromodulation for epilepsy, movement disorders, and other neurological conditions, as a nationally ranked center for neurology and neurosurgery.
- Expert team of neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuropsychiatrists, and other providers experienced in successfully treating people with severely debilitating conditions.
- Groundbreaking research with clinical trials for the latest neuromodulation therapies and a multispecialty collaboration with the Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute at Stanford Medicine.
- Life-enhancing solutions for people who need advanced treatment options after trying conventional treatments such as medications, physical therapy, or surgery.
What is Neuromodulation?
About Neuromodulation
Neuromodulation sends mild electrical pulses to stimulate the nerves involved in a specific condition to help relieve symptoms. Various types of neuromodulation devices and therapies treat a wide range of conditions involving nerves, muscles, and brain function.
Nerves send electrical signals between your brain and the rest of your body to control movement, feel pain and sensation, and perform many other functions. When a disease or injury affects the nerve signals, you experience pain, movement problems, and many other symptoms.
Our neurosurgeons and neurologists precisely place tiny electrodes next to the targeted nerves or area of the brain or spinal cord. The electrodes connect through thin leads to a small device, a power source that generates mild electrical pulses. The device delivers pulses through the leads to the electrodes to either interrupt pain signals or stimulate a neural response.
Neuromodulation therapy is highly personalized care because it’s:
- Testable: Before having a device implanted, you try the device and therapy to see how well it works for you.
- Adjustable: Our care team works closely with you to program the stimulation precisely to your needs, adjusting it over time as your needs change.
- Reversible: If you decide to stop treatment, doctors can remove the device, leads, and electrodes.
