Stanford Health Care Celebrates Completion of its New Stanford Cancer Center South Bay
June 26, 2015
Stanford's Leading Edge and Coordinated Cancer Services Will Soon be Available in the South Bay
STANFORD, Calif. June 26, 2015 – Stanford Health Care today held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion and upcoming opening of its new Stanford Cancer Center South Bay in San Jose. Attendees included Stanford Health Care employees and medical staff, area physicians, community members, and public officials. The Stanford Cancer Center South Bay brings Stanford Health Care's renowned comprehensive cancer services to the South Bay in a state-of-the-art, patient-oriented center.
"This stunning new facility has been designed with a complete focus on delivering the absolute best in cancer care and compassion to patients and families," said Amir Dan Rubin, president and CEO, Stanford Health Care. "At our Stanford Cancer Center South Bay, groundbreaking clinical treatments will be integrated into a patient-centered experience and facility, designed to promote outstanding care, compassion and healing."
The design of the Stanford Cancer Center South Bay was created to bring a multidisciplinary care team to each patient's exam room, rather than having patients move from one department to another during their visit. Every detail has been considered from the patient's perspective to support the delivery of the most advanced cancer care available, in a setting that is unsurpassed in the South Bay.
Planning for the building included extensive workflow design in partnership with Stanford's Patient and Family Advisory Councils, members of the local community, and a multidisciplinary team of physicians and staff to provide a welcoming and efficient layout. Details include separating the patient from the comings and goings of the medical staff to further enhance the calming effect of the space, and locating the infusion treatment area on the top floor with expansive windows providing calming views. Versatile care areas can be customized to accommodate patient and provider needs, and to adapt to evolving medical technology.
Moreover, the Stanford Cancer Center South Bay extends regional access to Stanford Health Care's leading edge and coordinated care. Stanford is known for a number of key breakthroughs in cancer, including the initial development of the tumor board, the first medical use of a linear accelerator, invention of the CyberKnife for focused radiation therapy, development of one of the first targeted cancer treatments through the use of monoclonal antibodies, and a host of other advances, several of which will be available to our patients in the South Bay.
"At Stanford Medicine, we are leading the biomedical revolution in Precision Health—and the new Stanford Cancer Center South Bay perfectly showcases the intersection of leading edge technology and science with personalized, precise and compassionate care," said Lloyd Minor, dean of the Stanford University School of Medicine.
"We are truly excited to extend Stanford's comprehensive and compassionate cancer care to more Bay Area residents, and we welcome the opportunity to enhance our growing clinical research program," said Beverly S. Mitchell, MD, Director, Stanford Cancer Institute.
The 70,000-square-foot facility, located at the intersection of State Route 85 and Los Gatos Boulevard in San Jose, is scheduled to open for patient care in mid July.
