Stanford Health Care – Now
Stanford Celebrates 20th Anniversary of CyberKnife Technology
10.03.2014
The CyberKnife was invented at Stanford Health Care and first debuted in 1994. Twenty years ago, the CyberKnife revolutionized cancer care by reducing treatment time and treating previously inoperable tumors. Now, its treatment repertoire has expanded beyond cancer.
Since then, the CyberKnife has treated well over 5,000 patients at Stanford, and 100,000 patients worldwide. The CyberKnife's special quality is that it tracks tumor movement whether from breathing or other patient motion. Its beam delivery arm reacts with minute precision to real-time images of the tumor. No radiation is sent out when the tumor moves out of the beam, protecting healthy tissue.
In 2014, CyberKnife inventor, John Adler, MD, along with his Stanford colleagues, celebrated the 20th anniversary of this groundbreaking technology.
