New surgeries and chemotherapies for colon cancer
Treatment for colon cancer at Stanford now includes many new options available to control even advanced disease. In this video, Stanford's colon cancer treatment experts explain the four stages of colon cancer and the treatment approach for each one.
We also share information about new types of surgery that include minimally invasive techniques for early stage tumors and collaboration with plastic surgeons to provide reconstructive support for the gastrointestinal tract after the removal of a tumor.
Featuring:
- Pelin Cinar, MD, GI medical oncologist
- Cindy Kin, MD, Colorectal surgeon
- Rahim Nazerali, MD, Plastic and reconstructive surgeon
Treatment collaborations also involve the carefully timed use of the latest chemotherapies using genetic analysis of each person’s tumor to determine which chemotherapy drug to use and in what combination with new biologic medications called monoclonal antibodies. Learn more about chemotherapy.
Patients benefit from the cohesive experience practiced at the Stanford Cancer Center, including the GI Tumor Board. The Tumor Board is a multidisciplinary team meeting including medical oncologists, colorectal surgeons, liver surgeons, thoracic surgeons, radiation oncologists, pathologists, radiologists, nurses, and other team members involved in your care, who together review your clinical records and provide comprehensive treatment recommendations. Stanford doctors aim to create a comprehensive and holistic treatment plan for patients that incorporates your life outside of the hospital, your goals, and quality of life.
