Proposing a New Framework for Digitally Enabled Care
09.18.2024
While the COVID-19 pandemic ushered in the rapid adoption of digitally enabled care models, the urgency of the pandemic response limited the full, thoughtful development of these care models. This has resulted in a workflow crisis for physicians, who are overburdened by increased electronic documentation and patient messages, and missed opportunities in improving value for patients. In this paper, our authors describe the features necessary for the successful implementation of a fully realized Digitally Enabled Care (DEC) framework, spanning the previsit, visit and postvisit periods. The DEC framework describes an entirely new set of digital resources and services to advance patient care and improve physician workload, made possible by the rise in AI technology. Importantly, the DEC framework also advocates for appropriate payment models for digitally enabled care.
