Using deep brain stimulation to give his patients a normal life is a daily inspiration for Stanford Health Care neurosurgeon Casey Halpern, MD. In this video, Halpern explains what happened as he first observed deep brain stimulation surgery—and how his interest has evolved since then. “If a small electrode in the brain can have such an incredible effect on a patient’s tremor and Parkinson’s disease,” he said, “couldn’t it do something just as effective in a different part of the brain for a different medical condition?”
Now, he uses deep brain stimulation to treat patients with movement disorders, epilepsy, chronic pain, and spine disorders. His research goal is to expand the uses of deep brain stimulation to other conditions, including psychiatric disorders, like obsessive-compulsive disorder.
