61-Year-Old Gets New Heart Valve at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford
10.23.2015
Why would a 61-year old grandfather receive heart surgery at a children's hospital?
Because Sang Hee Yoon, of San Jose, is one of more than a million U.S. adults living with a congenital heart defect. This fast-growing group requires the expertise of pediatric heart surgeons, like those in the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program at Stanford. Our multidisciplinary cardiovascular clinic provides comprehensive care and advanced treatments for a full spectrum of congenital heart defects, including recently discovered complex residual conditions, like Yoon had.
Born in South Korea, Yoon was one of the first people there to receive a surgical repair for a birth defect, which causes poor blood flow to the rest of the body. Although the initial repair worked well for many years, a recent MRI scan revealed a malfunctioning heart valve and enlargement of the right side of his heart.
When the time came to replace the faulty heart valve, doctors from Stanford's Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program were ready to help.
