A partnership between Stanford Health Care and Stanford Medicine Children’s Health
Work Group(s)
To ensure that Stanford Medicine’s goals are vigorously pursued, cross-disciplinary work groups were formed in 2021. Each work group is charged with enacting solutions that address the work group’s goals, as summarized below:
Energy, Transportation & Water
The Energy, Transportation & Water Work Group focuses on programming for all three scopes, whether it’s the elimination of natural gas on campus (Scope 1), reducing emissions of our purchased energy (Scope 2), reducing emissions from employee commutes or the purchase of supplied fuels (Scope 3). This work group develops the Energy Management Plan (EMP). Members of this work group include Facilities & Engineering staff as well as other stakeholders connected to Stanford Health Care’s energy sources such as Stanford University and Stanford Medicine Children’s Health.
Multi-Year Target: 50% reduction for Scopes 1 and 2 by 2030; Reduce Energy Use Intensity (EUI) 25% by 2030; Net-zero emissions for Scopes 1, 2 and 3 by 2050
Leads:
Inna Dolottseva, Energy Manager, Sustainability Program Office, Stanford Health Care
Krunal Rathod, Manager, Facilities and Engineering, Stanford Health Care
Waste Prevention
The Waste Prevention Work Group develops education, standards, best practices, and programs to improve sorting behaviors and minimize waste to landfill. The strategy focuses on continuous sort quality improvement coupled with waste prevention initiatives. While the target of waste prevention focuses on the Palo Alto Campus buildings, the work group is building partnerships, capacity, and programs that span the enterprise. Because of the complexity of infrastructure, members of this work group include Stanford Medicine Children’s Health and Stanford University.
Multi-Year Target: Achieve more than 90% reduction of waste to landfill at the Palo Alto Campus by 2030.
Lead:
Erika Kimball, Sustainability Consultant, Stanford Health Care
Sustainable Procurement and Utilization Management (SPUM)
The Sustainable Procurement Work Group is evolving to be the Sustainability Procurement and Utilization Management Work Group and is expanding its scope. In 2023, the Sustainable Procurement Work Group developed the Sustainable Procurement Policy to measure and manage the upstream greenhouse gas, waste generation, and hazardous chemicals impact of Stanford Medicine’s supply chain. The Sustainable Procurement Policy is currently being operationalized throughout the Supply Chain organization. The work group also began converting Nitrous Oxide from centralized delivery to a local cylinder delivery to greatly reduce scope 1 emissions. Purchased Goods & Services is the largest contributor to the Stanford Health Care greenhouse gas inventory and is an intricate challenge to address. Senior members of supply chain, Sustainability Program Office, and several other departments within Stanford Medicine, along with Stanford Medicine Children’s Health, contribute to this complex and undefined landscape.
Multi-Year Target: Zero Waste by 2030; 50% reduction for Scopes 1 and 2 by 2030; Net-zero emissions for Scopes 1, 2 and 3 by 2050.
Leads:
Terry Duffina, Director, Sustainability Program Office, Stanford Health Care
Meredith Edwards, Director, Sustainability and Diversity, Supply Chain, Stanford Health Care
Christy Foster, Director, Sustainability, Stanford Medicine Children’s Health
Design, Construction & Engineering
The Design, Construction & Engineering Work Group developed Stanford Health Care’s Sustainable Building Standards and Sustainable Landscape Design Guidelines. Establishing Stanford Health Care’s first set of sustainability-focused requirements for all new projects required strong collaboration primarily between the Planning, Design & Construction team and the Facilities Operations team, along with guidance and support of the Sustainability Program Office. The work group is now focused on operationalizing the standards and guidelines through a testing phase and creating supporting roll-out material to ease the transition for the relevant project management groups.
Multi-Year Target: 50% reduction for Scopes 1 and 2 by 2030; Net Zero Emissions in Scopes 1, 2 and 3 by 2050; Reduce Energy Use Intensity (EUI) 25% by 2030
Leads:
Saadat Khan, Energy Engineer, Sustainability Program Office, Stanford Health Care
Molly Swenson, Director, Land Use and Licensing, Planning, Design & Construction, Stanford Health Care
Technology & Digital Solutions
The TDS Work Group at Stanford Health Care is dedicated to fostering sustainable transformation through technology and innovation. This collaborative effort between Sustainability Program Office and TDS aims to drive sustainable practices across SHC, focusing on energy management of IT devices and software, waste reduction related to packaging of IT equipment, sustainable procurement decisions (such as EPEAT), and core technology capability development. Comprised of three teams, the work group challenges existing processes, invests in energy-efficient technology, influences vendors to prioritize sustainability, and effectively manages energy resources. The overarching goal is to facilitate sustainable actions through technology integration throughout SHC operations.
Multi-Year Target: Net-zero emissions for Scopes 1, 2 and 3 by 2050
Leads:
Eun-Soo Lim, Sr. Program Manager, Sustainability Program Office, Stanford Health Care
Inna Dolottseva, Energy Manager, Sustainability Program Office, Stanford Health Care
Ann-Marie Yap, Executive Director, IT Infrastructure
