Stanford Center for Sleep Sciences and Medicine

Unhealthy sleep and sleep deprivation are linked to heart disease, depression, obesity and lower life expectancy. Seventy million people suffer from chronic, severe sleep disorders in the United States alone. These include difficulties sleeping at night, problems with excessive daytime sleepiness, or other medical problems that may occur or be exacerbated during sleep.

Care and Treatment for Sleep Disorders

Planning Your Visit

Any visit to a doctor's office can be nerve-wracking. At the Stanford Sleep Medicine Center we want to be sure that you are fully prepared for your appointment to ensure every visit goes smoothly. This requires some preparation on your part to be sure you have all the information and material necessary for the appointment readily available.

Here are some helpful hints to help you schedule your appointment, prepare for the visit and ensure you know what to expect every step of the way.

Consultation with a sleep specialist

The Stanford Sleep Clinic faculty are extremly knowledgable about all types of sleep disorders. The clinic has three specialty clinics specifically tailored for patients with Insomnia, Narcolepsy and Restless Legs Syndrome.

No matter what your reason for visiting the Stanford Sleep Clinic, you can be sure that our physicians will do everything they can to help. We provide a wide range of services, with a multi-disciplinary staff that includes pulmonary specialists, psychologists, psychiatrists, neurologists, dentists, surgeons and pediatricians.

The first step toward resolving your sleep issue – even before an appointment with one of our sleep specialists – is to complete a patient questionnaire.

This will give your physician and other staff members at the Stanford Sleep Clinic detailed information about your sleep problems and any other health issues related to your condition. Your doctor will use this information during your consultation to ensure you receive the best possible care and all of your sleep related issues are addressed.

During a consultation appointment, your doctor will do a short physical exam and discuss the information you provided in the questionnaire. Based on your symptoms and history, you and your doctor will develop a treatment plan to resolve your sleep complaints.

Clinical Trials

When a study involves human subjects the researchers must carefully evaluate what type of individuals should participate in the study and develop inclusion and exclusion criteria to ensure appropriate individuals are enrolled. These criteria are devised for safety purposes and to ensure that the researchers will be able to devise conclusions based on the data collected. Each study has a study coordinator who works with the principal investigator to evaluate whether a person meets eligibility criteria.
