A video visit is a form of telehealth or virtual care that allows you to connect with your provider in a face-to-face video chat using your smartphone or computer. It is a convenient way to access world-class primary and specialty care from Stanford Health Care.
Most clinics at Stanford Health Care offer video visits, allowing you to see our providers virtually from a location that is convenient for you. Video visits are held through our MyHealth patient portal.
To schedule a video visit, you can:
- Book through MyHealth by selecting “Video Visit” as the appointment type.
- Contact the clinic directly.
To ensure your provider can give you the best care and experience possible, we recommend the following:
- Write your questions down ahead of time
You may find it helpful to write down questions before your appointment that you would like to address with your provider. - Choose your device ahead of time
Connect to your video visit from a computer or smartphone that is equipped with a camera and microphone. - Use the latest software
If you are using the MyHealth app on your mobile phone for the visit, make sure you have the most updated version of the app. If you are using a web browser on a computer, use the latest version of that browser for the best performance.
If you are accessing your video visit from a web browser and are prompted to install the VidyoConnect application, download the application, open the VidyoConnect installation wizard, and follow the step-by-step installation process. - Choose the right location
Choose a quiet, private location with strong internet connectivity. Do not have bright light behind your back, as this will impact the video exposure and make it hard for your provider to see you. - Log in early
Log in to MyHealth 5 to 15 minutes before your video visit. Once you're logged in, select "Appointments,” find your video visit from the list of “Upcoming” appointments, select "Begin Visit," and then wait for your provider to join. - Give your video visit the same attention you would an in-person visit:
Pay close attention during your video visit. Consider using headphones to better hear. Do not take your video visit while driving. Refrain from multitasking, including texting or eating. - Have a picture ID ready to show
Have a picture ID on hand, as your provider may ask to see it to confirm your identity. - Have your most recent health documentation accessible
Your provider may ask you to share your vitals, such as current temperature, weight, and blood pressure. If you can measure these before you start your visit, it may help with your evaluation. If you would like to discuss recent test results, have them accessible. - Know where to find help
If you need technical assistance, contact the MyHealth Service Desk at 1-866-367-0758 (available 24/7). If the technical issue persists during your appointment, your provider will call you to continue the appointment as a phone call.

During a video visit, you and your provider will meet virtually by face-to-face video chat.
Just like in a typical office visit, your provider can evaluate your symptoms, review test results, make diagnoses, recommend treatments, and prescribe medications. It is possible that your provider will determine that you should be seen in person for further evaluation or recommend you go for additional diagnostic tests.
You can take your video visit in a place that is convenient for you, eliminating travel time.
A virtual group video visit allows more than one patient to connect with a care team at the same time. Some of our care teams use group video visits to host online classes with patients.
You play an important role in making group video visits useful and positive. Follow the guidelines listed here during your video visit. This will help you have the best possible experience.
- Be prepared: Just as with an in-person visit, be ready to talk about your symptoms, concerns, or questions.
- Be on time: Log in a few minutes early to make sure your audio and video are working.
- Limit background noise: Choose a quiet place to have the video call. Avoid distractions.
- Use mute when you are not speaking: This prevents extra noise that may distract others.
- Be respectful: Allow others to finish speaking before you talk. Treat others as you would in a face-to-face meeting.
Remember, a video visit is just as important as an in-person visit. When you follow these guidelines, you help make sure that the video visit is efficient and helpful for everyone.

A video visit can be appropriate for primary care and specialty care. Most of our clinics offer video visits, and many conditions can be addressed using virtual care. Your care team can help determine if a video visit is right for your needs.
Video visits will be billed to your insurance the same as an in-person medical visit.
While many insurers recognize the value of telemedicine and cover video visits similarly to an office visit, you are encouraged to confirm coverage and your out-of-pocket costs with your health plan. The patient or their guarantor must accept full financial responsibility in accordance with the regular rates and terms of Stanford Health Care. This includes financial responsibility for all deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments that may be required.

No, video visits are not recorded or stored by Stanford Health Care.
Your provider will add written notes to your medical record which will be available to you in MyHealth as an after-visit note under “Past” in the “Appointments” section. Video visits are marked with the designation “Telemedicine.”
