The Stanford Hand Therapy Clinical Fellowship Program is a 12-month intensive learning experience in a renowned academic medical center. In addition to treating patients with a wide range of diagnoses, our experienced and talented hand therapy team has published, presented and collaborated at the local, national and international levels. Our team serves as the faculty for our fellowship program.
Our mission is to provide a supportive and evidence-based entry point for occupational therapists wanting to specialize and become leaders in the field of hand therapy. Our program offers unique learning experiences including:
- 1:1 weekly mentor time with fellowship faculty CHTs and our fellowship director
- Participation in lectures, rounds, cadaver labs, and/or journal clubs with the hand therapy team and the hand surgery department, which include attending surgeons, PAs/NPs, hand surgery fellows and surgical residents
- Lectures by the hand therapy fellowship faculty
- Shadowing opportunities in hand surgery clinics, surgery, pediatric hand therapy, pain rehabilitation, and physical therapy in Stanford's ortho sports outpatient clinic
- Interdisciplinary lectures from our colleagues in the physical therapy orthopedics residency
- An open and collaborative work environment with the hand therapy team
- 70% supervised patient care, 30% didactic learning
- Full access to Stanford University's Lane Medical Library
- Opportunities to participate and collaborate in research and present with the hand therapy team and hand surgery department
Program Outcomes
Our program began in 2015 and was the first AOTA-recognized fellowship program in Hand Therapy. As of 2024, we are proud to report that 100% of the graduates of our fellowship program who are eligible to sit for the CHT exam passed. Additionally, all graduates of our program found employment in hand therapy following their fellowships and continue to work in the field.
Eligibility and Selection Process
To be eligible for the fellowship, the applicant must have:
- Active licensure with the California Board of Occupational Therapy https://www.bot.ca.gov/
- At least 1 year of work experience as an occupational therapist (OT) with some of that experience in a hand therapy setting
- Examples of acceptable hand therapy experience include a level II fieldwork placement in hand therapy, employment in a hand therapy clinic, or shadowing a hand therapist
- Examples of acceptable hand therapy experience include a level II fieldwork placement in hand therapy, employment in a hand therapy clinic, or shadowing a hand therapist
- A strong desire to learn and become a leader in the field
- A desire to gain the knowledge and skills to successfully earn the certified hand therapist (CHT) designation and AOTA Board Certification in Physical Rehabilitation (BCPR)
Once applications have been received, they are reviewed by the fellowship committee and invitations for Zoom interviews will be sent to select candidates. The fellow is chosen by July and the fellowship begins in the last week of September.

Compensaton and Benefits
The hand therapy fellow is formally hired by Stanford Medicine as a fully-benefitted, salaried, entry-level therapist at 70% FTE. Benefits include health insurance. Housing and living expenses are the responsibility of the fellow.
