Clinical Nutrition Services at Stanford Health Care (SHC) provides medical nutrition therapy services to patients within SHC as well as the community.
The department consists of clinical dietitians with the professional title and credential of Registered Dietitian (RD). Our staff of highly experienced and specialized RDs provide evidence-based nutrition care to optimize patients’ recovery and well-being in the inpatient and outpatient settings.

Meet our leaders
Our Registered Dietitians are integral members of medical and clinical care teams and are routinely consulted for their expertise in nutrition care practice. Examples of what each RD at SHC does are:
- Provides nutrition care through evidence-based medical nutrition therapy
- Specialization in patient populations and disease states
- Possesses clinical knowledge to be routinely consulted for their expertise
- Interacts closely with physicians, nurses, social workers, therapists and other care team members to optimize care and recovery
- Monitors patient’s disease process and makes formal nutrition recommendations to their clinical care team
- Develops and implements individualized nutrition care process and care plans for each patient
- Counsels patients, families and care givers on a variety of therapeutic diets and nutrition strategies to aid in managing disease symptoms and/or prevention of disease
In addition to direct patient care at Stanford Health Care, our team of clinical dietitians also participate in and lead quality improvement projects across the organization. Examples of current and past quality improvement projects include:
- Nutrition-focused physical exam training and malnutrition documentation
- Developing high risk enteral nutrition feeding protocols
- Assessing frailty in solid organ transplant
- Enhancing weight management interventions and patient resources in Primary Care
- Volume based tube feeding protocols in ICU settings
Stanford Health Care clinical dietitians also serve our local community by delivering nutrition and wellness talks in conjunction with the Stanford Medical Library, Stanford Medicine patient and caregiver events and other local community groups.
