Program Overview
The Stanford Nurse Alumnae Legacy Grants are intended to perpetuate the Stanford University School of Nursing''s tradition of excellence in nursing practice, leadership, education and research.
The Stanford Nurse Alumnae Legacy Grant Funds are a living expression of an enduring commitment to academic nursing practice at Stanford.
The aims of the project are to:
- Build on the foundation of academic nursing established by the Stanford University School of Nursing.
- Enhance nurses' professional development through sponsoring research and practice improvement projects.
- Promote nursing's active role and influence in improving health care delivery and advancing patient outcomes.
The Legacy Funds provides grant support up to $10,000 to advance innovative research and demonstration projects that improve health care outcomes, the patient experience, and health system efficiency.
Examples of fundable projects include:
- Development and evaluation of a patient education project
- Measurement of a novel intervention’s impact on clinical care
- Assessment of a practice change or new technique that improves patient outcomes
- Implementation of guideline-based care for patients discharged on specialized therapies
Projects aligned with your institution’s strategic plan are highly encouraged.

Letter of Intent (LOI)
Beginning in 2026, applicants interested in submitting a Legacy Grant application must submit a brief letter of intent (LOI) by July 1 before being invited to submit for a full Stanford Nurse Alumnae Legacy Grant application.
Selected LOIs will be invited into our new Nursing Research Fellowship program (nSPARK), during which fellows will work directly with nurse and research scientists to develop and refine their full grant proposal and receive methodological support and mentorship.
Who May Apply for the Legacy Grant
Project teams are encouraged. However, the principal applicant must be either a:
- Registered nurse employed by Stanford Health Care, Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford, or an affiliated off-campus site; OR
- A graduate of the Stanford University School of Nursing

- Recommended: Please meet for a consultation with a nurse scientist at least 2 - 3 months prior to submission.
- Do not wait until the last minute.

- The guidelines will provide important information on expectations and the process for reimbursement should your project be accepted.
Strongly recommended for applicants to attend a consultation meeting with a nurse scientist from their respective organization.
- Complete application to the best of your ability and schedule a consultation with a nurse scientist at least 2 - 3 months prior to the submission deadline.

Dissemination of Stanford Nurse Alumnae Legacy Grant Results
Because the Stanford Nurse Alumnae Legacy Grants are intended to support nursing excellence, grant recipients are expected to disseminate project results. Dissemination of results through journal publication, nursing grand rounds, and/or conference presentation(s) is expected.
All publications and presentations must acknowledge the Stanford Nurse Alumnae Legacy Grant and the supporting institutional affiliations.
Project Timeframe
Once awarded, Stanford Nurse Alumnae Legacy Grants are typically conducted and completed within a continuous one-year period following appropriate administrative and Institutional Review Board (IRB) approvals.
Proposal Development and Review Process
New Stanford Nurse Alumnae Legacy Grant applications are reviewed and funded on a biannual basis, as funds permit. The proposal development and submission process begins with an idea, question or issue that is congruent with the aims of the Legacy grants.
It is recommended that an interdisciplinary team be convened to develop the idea and form the clinical question you want to investigate.
The research nurse scientists at your organization will assist potential grant applicants with:
- Exploring ideas, questions or issues to study
- Confirming the strategic significance of the proposal idea
- Forming Stanford Nurse Alumnae Legacy Grant teams as needed
- Clarifying budget parameters
Proposals submitted to the Stanford Nurse Alumnae Legacy Grant committee should include the following:
- Purpose and aims
- Background and significance
- Pilot Work
- Research Study or Project Design
- Timeline
- Budget
- References
- Letters of support
- Supplemental documents if applicable
- Projects with a research component should include hypotheses, a definition of the sample population to be studied and a description of data collection and analysis.
Legacy Project Report Outs
All accepted Legacy Grant Projects must submit two required reports over the project term: A 6-Month Progress Report and a 12-Month Final Project Summary.
You will be required to submit a 6-month progress report and a 12-month final project summary as well as quarterly finance reports.
