Scope Blog: "Rehearsal ready: Trying out the new Stanford Hospital"
September 13, 2019
After a patient was rushed into the emergency department, dozens of Stanford Health Care staff were ready to jump into action and provide immediate care. Only this wasn't a real trauma situation -- the patient on the gurney was one of the 850 doctors, nurses, ancillary staff, planning staff and more who participated in a recent dress rehearsal as part of the final preparations for the opening of the new Stanford Hospital this fall.
ABC7 News was on hand to capture staff working through a variety of hypothetical medical scenarios.
The new hospital will include 368 patient rooms, 20 operating rooms and a Level 1 trauma center/emergency department twice the size of the current one. Special attention on families and caregivers was also given, with additional space and a pullout couch included in every patient room.
"In the intensive care unit, what's really different for us it that we're providing a place for families to stay, and they can be with their family member, their sick family member 24 hours a day essentially," said Ann Weinacker, MD, associate chief medical officer of patient care services, in the video above.
The hospital opens up to the public this weekend, Sept. 14 and 15, for the Community Open House. All are welcome.
