Genetics of a Tumor
03.23.2015
Using Tumor Genetics to Guide Treatment
Genetics play a part in your risk of developing of colon cancer, but they also have a role in what kind of treatment you receive and how successful it is. Analyzing the genetics of each tumor has shown that every tumor has an individual set of mutations and molecular changes. Some of these changes are hereditary; others occur spontaneously. What’s important is to know what they are.
At Stanford’s Cancer Genetics Program, analysis of tumors guides treatment approaches that can be designed to target those mutations and make treatments more effective. If the tumor has mutations for which there is no standard treatment, the analysis will identify what new therapies, some in clinical trial stage, could work effectively. This video explains how Stanford doctors use the genetics of each tumor to craft very personalized treatment.
