Cataracts and Intraocular Lenses
Cataracts and Intraocular Lenses
Cataract surgery is the most commonly performed eye surgery in the world. Through a state-of-the-art process called phacoemulsification, our surgeons use small incisions with a foldable lens implant that allows for faster and better visual recovery after cataract surgery, with less post-operative astigmatism. In our expert hands, the procedure takes 15 minutes or less to perform.
We offer the latest in technologies in lenses and eye care, including laser cataract surgery and a full range of premium, next-generation intraocular lenses able to correct astigmatism and give both distance and near vision after surgery.

Our program offers all the features you need for leading cataract care:
- Top doctors: Our experienced doctors can examine your cataracts and help you decide when to pursue treatment. They not only provide successful outcomes for standard cataracts but also specialize in complex cases, receiving referrals from throughout California.
- Latest equipment: We offer all the tools needed to restore your vision:
- Latest phacoemulsification ultrasound machines to break up cataracts
- Sophisticated surgical microscopes with the best optics and light sources available
- Optional Intraoperative aberrometry to help determine the best replacement lens
- Optional CATALYS® femtosecond laser (developed by researchers with Stanford connections) to make precise cuts and pre-soften the lens
- Optional premium lenses that can correct astigmatism or provide both distance and near vision
- Combined surgeries: Patients with cataracts often have other eye conditions, including glaucoma or problems with their cornea or retina. The expanded expertise of Stanford surgeons means that operations for these additional conditions might prove possible at the same time — a service not widely available elsewhere.
- One-stop shop: Our doctors also write prescriptions for new glasses or contact lenses, which you can then fill on-site.

About Cataract Surgery
Cataract surgery is the most commonly performed eye surgery in the world, and Stanford offers state-of-the-art cataract surgery by a process called phacoemulsification, or the destruction and removal of cataracts with sound waves.
Our surgeons use small incisions with foldable lens implants that allow for better and faster visual recovery after cataract surgery, with less post-operative astigmatism. In expert hands, the procedure takes only 15 minutes or less to perform, with local anesthesia, and is done on an out-patient basis, with the patient being able to go home soon after surgery.
In addition, we are now pleased to offer femtosecond laser assisted surgery for appropriate candidates with the Catalys® Laser, which was developed here at Stanford. Learn more about cataract surgery.
