Cataracts and Intraocular Lenses
Cataracts and Intraocular Lenses
Cataract surgery is the most commonly performed eye surgery in the world. Through a state-of-the-art process called phacoemulsification, our surgeons use small incisions with a foldable lens implant that allows for faster and better visual recovery after cataract surgery, with less post-operative astigmatism. In our expert hands, the procedure takes 15 minutes or less to perform.
We offer the latest in technologies in lenses and eye care, including laser cataract surgery and a full range of premium, next-generation intraocular lenses able to correct astigmatism and give both distance and near vision after surgery.

Care and Treatment for Cataracts and Intraocular Lenses
How Is Cataract Surgery Performed?
Typically, the natural lens is softened with ultrasound and removed via suction through a very small incision. The removed lens is then replaced with a synthetic clear intraocular lens (IOL), all in less than 20 minutes.
Modern cataract surgery, led by researchers at Stanford, has improved in recent years with the development of the femtosecond laser, which can more safely soften the lens and more precisely make the incisions in the eye than manual and ultrasound techniques.
Custom IOLs that can correct for astigmatism and near vision are now available for selected cases.
Stanford has the newest lasers and other equipment available, including custom IOLs and a highly experienced group of cataract surgeons that can determine whether cataract surgery will benefit patients, and the best type of surgical technique and IOL implant to use.
