Dr. Nikki Duong is a triple board-certified, fellowship-trained gastroenterologist and transplant hepatologist with Stanford Health Care. He is also a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Stanford University School of Medicine.

Dr. Duong specializes in treating liver diseases, including cirrhosis, chronic liver disease, liver cancer, autoimmune hepatitis, and viral hepatitis. He also cares for general gastrointestinal disorders, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and colorectal conditions. He is skilled in minimally invasive endoscopic procedures to diagnose problems inside the gastrointestinal system.

Dr. Duong strives to provide outstanding, evidence-based care to every patient. He believes that the best medical care happens when a provider understands the bigger picture, is open-minded, and marries knowledge of science and technology with integrity and humanism. He values clear communication, long-term patient relationships, and empathy, recognizing that each person has a unique story and background.

Dr. Duong’s research interests span the fields of gastroenterology and hepatology. He studies disparities for racial, sexual, and gender minority patients and providers in the field of gastroenterology and hepatology. As a son to immigrant parents and a member of the LGBTQ+ community, Dr. Duong understands firsthand the complexities surrounding access to care and social determinants of health.

Dr. Duong has published his extensive research in peer-reviewed journals including Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology, Journal of Liver Transplantation, and American Journal of Gastroenterology. He has also written extensively about the gastroenterology and hepatology fellowship process to educate and support the next generation of providers.

As a strong advocate for the LGBTQ+ medical community, he has made several media and podcast appearances and has spoken at the LGBT Health Workforce Conference. He has also collaborated with the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG), American Gastroenterological Association (AGA), and American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy to share resources and his experience.

Dr. Duong serves on several ACG committees and currently leads the ACG Mentorship Program. He is the associate editor for ACG Evidence-Based GI and social media ambassador for the AGA journal, Gastro Hep Advances. He also serves as co-executive director of Rainbows in Gastro, a nonprofit that provides a platform for research, mentorship, and community advocacy.
