Biography

Dr. Kawana joined the Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology group in 2018. He completed his internal medicine, cardiovascular medicine, and heart failure training at Stanford. He also completed a postdoctoral research fellowship under Dr. James Spudich in the Department of Biochemistry. He sees advanced heart failure patients in the clinic and attends CCU/heart failure service, and post-heart transplant and MCS service. His research interests are in the fundamental mechanism of inherited cardiomyopathies, and he studies the effect of gene mutation on the cardiac sarcomere function using cutting-edge biochemical and biophysical approaches, which would lead to the development of novel pharmacotherapy that directly modulates cardiac muscle protein. He is involved in multiple clinical trials for pharmacotherapy in inherited cardiomyopathy and also conducting a device study in heart failure.

See previous comments on previous page. I am grateful for Dr. Kawana. I feel that I can rely completely on his professional abilities, and caring provides me with a great deal of comfort, although I know that my declining health is not a battle that I can win

Dr Kawana is one of the best doctors at Stanford. He is compassionate, generous with his time and guidance and very patient. I would recommend him to anyone without question.
He's a bit cold and distant. Also, doesn't really go over the test results in detail, such as doesn't show me a graph of my heart's progress, images of the ultrasound, or go over past and current ejection fraction numbers.
Answered all my questions and he was very patient and thorough.
Excellent Dr. very professional.

Dr. Kawana is an excellent care provider.
Knows what my needs are.
I am a native Japanese speeding person and of course it is quite comfortable for me to talk with Dr. Kaeana in Japanese since medical expression in English is some times difficult and it is frustrating. However even before such a language barrier he is a very warm hearted doctor, not just providing the professional and technical information. He has kindness that stays with patient. Patients always would like to feel that care is given by doctors and nurses, in my personal feeling.
Very helpful in explaining my heart medication use for now, and it's possible changes in the future after a up-coming procedure.
Highly recommend!!

Dr. Kawana gives a very clear & detailed explanation on the type of sickness I have, the care and treatment that I need and being given, and provider, and the quality time he spends with me, & his urgency in providing care when I needed it not like when I had or experienced chest pain. Very thankful I have him as my doctor.
Doctors Kedelco and Kawana are the best doctors I have ever had. They both go out of their way to accommodate me.
