Dermatomyositis Treatment
Dermatomyositis Treatment at Stanford
The Stanford Neuromuscular Program takes a comprehensive, holistic approach to treating dermatomyositis. We collaborate closely with other specialties, such as the General Dermatology Clinic, to treat both the skin rash and the muscle weakness.
The symptoms of dermatomyositis often can be well-managed using a variety of treatments, including:
- Medications like corticosteroids
- Immunosuppressant medications to lessen your immune system's attack on your muscle tissue
- Immunoglobulin, a blood product that reduces the immune system's attack on the body's own tissues
- Physical therapy to improve muscle strength

Dermatomyositis Clinical Trials
Stanford investigators regularly participate in research studies to increase their understanding of conditions like inflammatory myopathies. As a Stanford Health Care patient, you may have access to the latest, advanced clinical trials, such as those studying the use of biologic medications (genetically engineered drugs) to treat the symptoms of dermatomyositis.
Clinical Trials
Clinical trials are research studies that evaluate a new medical approach, device, drug, or other treatment. As a Stanford Health Care patient, you may have access to the latest, advanced clinical trials.
Open trials refer to studies currently accepting participants. Closed trials are not currently enrolling, but may open in the future.
