Types of Treatment for Patulous Eustachian Tube Dysfunction
At Stanford Health Care, you receive personalized care and a treatment plan tailored to your unique needs. Your doctor may recommend strategies you can try at home to relieve symptoms. If they are not effective, you may need medication or surgery.
Noninvasive treatments for patulous Eustachian tube don’t require a prescription or medical intervention. They include relatively simple, at-home strategies to help you feel better, such as:
- Increasing your fluid intake
- Putting your head between your legs briefly or laying down
- Using a saline nasal spray
Your doctor may recommend nasal medications to help close your Eustachian tubes.
Surgical options for patulous Eustachian tube dysfunction may focus on either end of the Eustachian tube. Procedures your doctor may recommend include:
- Eardrum patching: Your doctor applies a graft made of special paper to the eardrum to relieve symptoms.
- Eustachian tube plugging: This treatment involves inserting fillers or plugs to help close the Eustachian tube opening in the nasal cavity.
