What is Ablation for Barrett’s Esophagus?
Types of Ablation Therapy
At Stanford, our team leads the way in ablation therapies for treating Barrett’s esophagus. We design your treatment plan to address the condition, relieve your symptoms, and help prevent further complications. We offer several treatments to suit your needs:
- Radiofrequency ablation: Our doctors helped establish radiofrequency ablation, a widely used treatment for certain heart conditions, as a powerful therapy for Barrett’s esophagus. Stanford gastrointestinal specialists have many years of experience performing this treatment for esophageal conditions. Radiofrequency ablation uses heat from radio wave energy to destroy esophageal tissue damaged by exposure to stomach acid.
- Cryoballoon ablation: Our clinic is one of only a few health care centers offering this innovative treatment. Your doctor passes a special balloon through an endoscope to the area of damaged tissue in your esophagus. Then, he or she inflates the balloon, which conforms to the exact size and shape of your esophagus. The balloon freezes and destroys damaged esophageal tissue.
- Endoscopic mucosal resection and endoscopic submucosal dissection: Our team is also one of the few centers offering these procedures for Barrett’s esophagus with nodular disease, including early cancers. Your doctor will use an endoscope with special equipment to remove the affected tissue.
