About this Treatment: Allogeneic Blood and Marrow Tranplantation
Steps of Blood and Marrow Transplantation
A BMT begins with the preparation therapy that includes chemotherapy with or without radiation. That is followed by the transplant, which is the infusion of the donor’s cells into your body through a catheter (tube) in your vein.
The donor is identified and evaluated, before the preparation therapy begins.
The donor’s stem cells are collected from the bloodstream in a procedure called apheresis, that is similar to the way a person donates blood. The blood is collected from the vein through a catheter (tube). The collection of the donor’s cells takes about 4 hours and may take place over 1 to 3 days.
Sometimes the transplant is given while you are an outpatient, but most often the transplant will require hospitalization.
After the transplant, you will be monitored closely by your health care team. Often patients make follow-up visits to the clinic for several weeks after the transplant.
