About High-intensity Focused Ultrasound for Prostate Cancer
High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is an alternative to active surveillance, surgery, or radiation therapy for treatment of early stage or recurrent prostate cancers.
Although HIFU is relatively new to prostate cancer treatment in the United States, it has been used in Europe and Asia for nearly two decades.
HIFU uses ultrasound to kill cancer cells.
HIFU may be recommended for cancers that are localized to the prostate gland. It is not appropriate for cancer that has spread to other parts of the body.
