LINX®
Our Approach to LINX®
For many people, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) occurs often and causes unpleasant symptoms, including frequent heartburn. Stanford offers the LINX® system, a special magnetic device that your doctor places around the outside of your esophagus. The device offers long-term symptom management for people living with GERD.
We are one of a handful of health care facilities in the San Francisco Bay Area offering treatment with the LINX® reflux management system. Our doctors use a minimally invasive procedure to implant the device, which helps prevent GERD while allowing you to eat and drink as you normally do.
What We Offer You for LINX®
- Expert care from doctors who are among the first in the San Francisco Bay Area to offer LINX® as an effective, long-term treatment for managing the symptoms of GERD.
- Minimally invasive approach to implant the LINX® device, using a laparoscopic procedure that helps prevent certain complications, decreases pain levels, and speeds up recovery time.
- Team-based care using input from doctors in several gastrointestinal specialties, including surgery, to provide you with the information you need to make the best decisions about your health.
What Is LINX®?
About LINX ®
For many people, the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) can interfere with daily life. At Stanford, our gastrointestinal specialists offer the LINX® device, implanted using a minimally invasive laparoscopic procedure, that can provide lifelong symptom relief.
Your doctor uses an endoscope, a thin, flexible tube, to view the interior of your esophagus and measure the circumference of the junction (sphincter) between your esophagus and stomach. Using your personal measurements, your doctor crafts a special magnetic “bracelet” that surrounds your esophagus from the outside. The doctor places the bracelet around your esophagus using small incisions in your abdominal wall.
The magnetic bracelet allows you to eat and drink as you normally would. When you swallow, the bracelet opens to allow the passage of food and liquid into your stomach. After food or liquid has passed into your stomach, the bracelet closes again, preventing stomach contents and acid from backing up into your esophagus.
