Our Approach to Orthobiologics and Regenerative Medicine
Orthobiologics, also known as regenerative medicine, is a rapidly advancing field that offers new options to treat acute orthopaedic injuries and chronic or degenerative conditions without surgery. It is one of multiple promising treatments for muscle, joint, and soft tissue injuries.
Stanford Health Care providers are on the leading edge of regenerative medicine treatments. We work with a multidisciplinary team of orthopaedic surgeons, sports medicine doctors, advanced practice providers, and physical therapists to help patients find the most effective and least invasive options for a wide range of injuries and conditions.
Our providers have been using orthobiologics for more than 10 years, leading the way in researching and applying these medical advances to improve patient care.
What We Offer You With Orthobiologic Treatment
- Multidisciplinary team of orthopaedic surgeons, sports medicine doctors, advanced practice providers, and physical therapists to advise each patient on the best treatment approach

What Is Orthobiologics and Regenerative Medicine?
Conditions Treated With Orthobiologics and Regenerative Medicine
Orthobiologic injections are used for both acute and chronic orthopaedic conditions, including:
- Injuries to ligaments, tendons, and cartilage, such as a rotator cuff tear, an elbow tendon tear, and osteochondral defects (OCD)
- Chronic, degenerative conditions, including osteoarthritis in the hip and knee joints
There are several ways our doctors can treat these conditions. In addition to regenerative medicine, treatment options may include:
- At-home pain management using nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
- Physical therapy to strengthen muscles, improve mobility, and correct biomechanical issues
- Steroid (cortisone) injections to temporarily relieve pain
- Surgery to repair damaged joints or soft tissues
While surgery can work well to correct orthopaedic injuries, it may not be the right choice for everyone. Before orthobiologics were widely available, there were limited options for people who could not have surgery or for whom physical therapy did not provide relief.
Regenerative medicine offers a safe and effective nonsurgical alternative for many people. By using your own tissue and cells, you avoid complications that often come with medications, including side effects and allergic reactions.
