This non-surgical procedure offers a precise way to treat some skin cancers and precancerous growths caused by sun damage. Photodynamic therapy is a treatment that uses certain drugs called photosensitizing agents, along with light, to kill cancer cells. The drugs work after they have been activated or “turned on” by certain kinds of light.
The advantage of PDT is that it requires less time compared with topical (skin cream) therapy. Like the other therapies for precancerous skin spots, however, multiple treatments may be necessary.
PDT is an FDA-approved treatment for precancerous skin lesions called actinic keratoses.
