About this Treatment: Radioactive Iodine Therapy
Side Effects and Risks of Radioactive Iodine Therapy
Small amounts of radioiodine can remain in the body for up to three months following treatment. Most of the radioiodine is eliminated from the body during the first week after treatment, primarily through urine.
Very small amounts are released through in saliva, sweat and bowel movements. As a result, patients must observe certain precautions to minimize radiation exposure to others.
Side effects of radioactive iodine treatment can include:
- A burning sensation or tenderness in the area near the neck
- Nausea
- Swelling or tenderness to the salivary glands
- Temporary changes in taste
- Dry mouth or reduced tear production
Your care team can recommend or prescribe treatments to address these side effects and help keep you comfortable as you heal.
