Our Approach to Radiofrequency Ablation
Lumps or bumps in the thyroid gland (thyroid nodules) are very common, especially as we get older. Most thyroid nodules are noncancerous. But larger nodules may cause symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, a sensation of pressure or discomfort, or even subtle voice changes that can impact quality of life.
Many people want a treatment option for thyroid nodules that doesn’t involve medications, surgery, or downtime. At Stanford Health Care, we offer radiofrequency ablation (RFA), a minimally invasive therapy that uses radio waves to shrink thyroid nodules.
With radiofrequency ablation, you can go home the same day and return to your daily activities within 24-48 hours. As the thyroid nodules shrink, your symptoms gradually improve.

What Is Radiofrequency Ablation?
Conditions Treated With Radiofrequency Ablation
Thyroid nodules are growths in your thyroid, a butterfly-shaped gland in your neck. Your thyroid releases thyroid hormone, which controls many functions in your body, including your heart rate and metabolism.
Nearly half of all adults age 60 or older have a thyroid nodule. About 90% of thyroid nodules are noncancerous (benign). But large thyroid nodules can cause bothersome symptoms, including:
- Difficulty swallowing
- Hoarse voice or voice changes
- Sensation of pressure or discomfort
- Trouble breathing
- Visible swelling in the neck (goiter)
Radiofrequency ablation can help relieve these symptoms by reducing the size of thyroid nodules without surgery.
Doctors most commonly use RFA to treat noncancerous thyroid nodules. In some cases, it can be used to treat cancerous thyroid tumors. For example, RFA may be an option if you have a high risk of complications from surgery due to other health conditions or previous surgery. It can also be used for small thyroid cancers that have not spread outside the thyroid gland. If you have a thyroid tumor, your doctor will recommend the most appropriate treatment option for you.
