What is Adrenal Surgery?
About Adrenal Surgery
Surgery is the main treatment for most adrenal tumors. Adrenal surgery can treat all types of adrenal tumors, including adrenocortical carcinomas (ACC), pheochromocytomas, and paragangliomas. Surgery can also remove noncancerous adrenal tumors that produce harmful levels of hormones.
During adrenal surgery, the surgeon removes the adrenal gland, which sits atop the kidney. Sometimes, cancerous cells spread beyond the adrenal gland. In these cases, our team has expertise in removing other affected tissue during the same procedure to give you the best outcome. When possible, we use minimally invasive laparoscopic or robot-assisted surgery, which use small incisions for a faster recovery.
For some people with benign (noncancerous) or low-grade adrenal tumors, surgery may eliminate cancer and related hormonal issues. Other conditions, including adrenocortical carcinoma, may require more treatment after surgery. In these cases, our team delivers coordinated chemotherapy and radiation.
