About this Treatment: Topical Medications for Non-Melanoma
About Topical Therapy
Topical skin cream is an option when a patient has very superficial non-melanoma on their head or neck, where surgery may not be necessary.
Doctors may use a prescription skin cream that is very effective for certain subtypes of non-melanoma, particularly non-melanoma in situ, which involves the top layer of the skin (epidermis).
A prescription skin cream is an option for:
- Non-melanoma growing on the face, head or neck on an area that is not suited for surgery, or where the surgical margins are too indistinct to know whether the non-melanoma is removed on pathology
- As an additional treatment after surgery has removed all or most of the non-melanoma
Topical therapy is used to treat skin cancers that are limited to the first layer of the skin (epidermis). These medications are applied by the patient to the skin and they create an inflammatory reaction on the skin surface leading to temporary redness, crusting and scabbing. The benefit of these topical medications is that they can be applied at home, the medication creams will often treat adjacent precancerous cells, and when used in the right setting, can provide good cure rates without an invasive procedure.About topical therapy
