Biography
Kristen Steenerson is a board-certified neurologist with fellowship training in otoneurology. After graduating cum laude from Claremont McKenna College where she was honored as an All-American lacrosse defensive player, she continued on to medical school at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah. After four years of excellent training and annual ski passes, she proceeded to the Mayo Clinic in Arizona for neurology residency. There, she discovered the beauty of the Sonoran Desert as well as an unmet need in balance disorders and vertigo, motivating her to pursue a fellowship in otoneurology at Barrow Neurological Institute. She joins Stanford with positions in both Otolaryngology--Head and Neck Surgery and Neurology with the goal of jointly addressing the junction of inner ear and brain disorders. Her specific interests include vestibular migraine, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, Ménière's disease and international neurology.

I am so grateful for the ongoing expert medical care and insight provided by Dr. Steenerson. Her knowledge, articulation of disease mechanism and treatment options are so helpful to me in developing an understanding of my vestibular system issues. She is patient, answers all questions and provides helpful referrals and coping strategies to help me address the challenges of Ménière’s disease, PPPV and vertigo. It’s such a relief to find someone who understands what it’s like to live with the symptoms that come with this set of disorders. She brings hope to what often feels like a set of intractable medical conditions.
Dr. Steenerson was very knowledgeable and explained everything in terms that I understood. She asked me periodically if I had any questions. She really helped me understand how my vestibular system works and what I could do to help me heal from the constant dizziness. She gave me numerous resources and information. I felt very comfortable during my visit.

I’m so thankful for Dr Steenerson and her team! I went from barely being able to walk/function to having an understanding what was happening with my body and having the tools to begin a healing journey. She was great at helping me understand possible diagnosis, understanding my MRI results, helping me get vestibular rehab, and sending over helpful lifestyle information/resources to help me heal.
It is obvious she knows her field but for a while I was concerned that my full medical history was of no interest to her. After the walking tests I felt she understood my true limitations. She also warmed up when my cat joined the call.
Dr. Steenerson was very generous with her time and expertise during our visit. She came up with a care plan for my complex issues and is tailoring her recommendations to my specific needs.

Excellent overall visit. All issues addressed.
She is a wonderful doctor, unlike a few other doctors we've seen at Stanford. Mainly because she sees the BIG PICTURE. Other doctors we've seen at Stanford tend to stick to only their specialty and don't really see the BIG PICTURE of my illness and how there are several factors, and issues that are linked together. I felt like she looked at the big picture and let me know what her recommendations are to treat, not only what she specializes in, but many other complications I'm experiencing. To be honest, I was very skeptical about what would come out of this appointment. But, in the end, Dr. Steenerson provided sound recommendations and let me know what are the next steps I need to take.

Dr. Steenerson is a very pleasant, empathetic person who is extremely thorough. She took the time needed to get my input and listened very carefully. She explained the results of my CNG testing thoroughly and gave her input on the MRIs that I had had previously, which was helpful.
After the data had all been discussed she gave a clear summary of vestibular diseases and explained where I fit in the spectrum. She then discussed her most likely diagnosis (vestibular migraine with cervicogenic and BPPV components) and possible treatment options.
Dr. Steenerson then came up with a reasonable treatment plan involving several modalities. The pharmaceutical part (Nurtec) may depend on Insurance approvals.
Dr. Steenerson was extremely helpful. Her explanations and plan for treatment made me feel encouraged and confident that hat I had found the right doctor. She was very thorough and made sure I understood each detail of treatment. I would recommend her to anyone with my condition to schedule an appointment with her.

I saw many doctors for 2 years and it wasn’t until I was finally referred to Dr. Steenerson that I was finally given a correct diagnosis for PPPD. Sadly to say, the condition had worsened by then, so it’s more difficult to treat now.
Nevertheless I am very thankful to have this wonderful doctor to care for me. She continues to look for the best treatment to improve my condition and she never makes me feel that there isn’t anything more that can be done for me. I feel hopeful under her care.

She seemed to understand that women especially are often shamed by doctors and told that exercise and losing weight is the answer, implying that it’s our own fault for our illnesses. I was grateful that she discussed several treatment options and plans in a non-judgmental way and really wanted my input in coming up with a treatment plan rather than just telling me what I “need†to do. And I also appreciated that she had knowledge of other health issues that I have and talked about how they connect the issues we were there to discuss. So many times when I see a specialist, I feel as if they do not look at the full picture. Overall, I am exceedingly grateful that I was able to meet with her.

I've done a lot of research on my chronic symptoms and usually speak/ask about things I've found. Often times, Dr.'s get annoyed but Dr. Steenerson did not at all- she addressed everything I asked about, which was very comforting.

I've ALREADY recommended her to more than one person. OUTSTANDING. I've seen doctors related to what I now know is vestibular migraines for 4 years and she has been by FAR the most helpful and also the most empathic and concerned which makes a huge difference too. She's possibly my favorite doctor I've ever seen. I felt at ease, cared for, that she was concerned for my health and understood how I might be feeling (emotionally and physically), and that no question was too detailed or that she was rushed at all. The nurse was also amazing. They were both great at making sure I knew what was about to happen/what they needed to do, using a gentle voice, just all around AMAZING. I have been raving about Dr. Steenersen/son(?) since the appointment. It almost brought me to tears how much of a contrast she was to some of my other medical experiences with this issue, and I could tell she understood that and is aware that she's filling a gap. Her mentioning that in her bio was one of the reasons I was interested in seeing her, once her name was brought up to me. I hope she feels proud of how she's providing care and easing suffering with (I'm sure) every patient she sees, I was really touched. Not to mention that I now know WTF is going on with my brain and balance! :) That almost felt like the cherry on top, she was so good. I just had an overwhelming sense that she was incredibly knowledgeable, up to date, was interested in my experience with my symptoms and was using that information to make diagnostic decisions, and was completely focused on our interaction. Her explanations of what was going on were fantastic, it was amazing that she wrote things down (because it was a lot of info and I was glad to have the notes later) and seemed to either have had personal experience as a patient with a similar issue or have thought out every aspect of what it would be like to be her patient and made sure she did everything she could to make it caring, positive, useful, and orienting. I was floored. The more than 6 month wait was absolutely worth it. Also Hiro in rehab was similarly fantastic and caring as well as professional and helpful. Superteam together!

Four other doctors recommended that I see her for help with some vestibular problems, and I understand why. She is warm and caring, but also incisive in her thinking, deeply expert in her field, and confident in her judgment and recommendations. I so appreciated the way she explained her hypotheses about my health problems, and the rational for her treatment approach, which made it easier to stick with the treatment plan even when my body didn't tolerate it that well at times. As far as I can tell, Dr. Steenerson is at the top of her game, and Stanford is lucky to have her!
