APP Journey at Stanford
A PART OF CENTER FOR ADVANCED PRACTICE
CAP supports various APP led committees including Wellness, Grand Rounds, Newsletter, Mentorship, and Community Outreach, which all promote APP engagement. The CAP programs and initiatives continue to transition to digital platforms to align with the digitally driven strategic priority. The Mentorship and Coaching Programs are on digital platforms allowing for professional development support and mentorship of APP in any geographic location. The Stanford Health Care CAP team is a leader when it comes to programs for supporting APPs and few institutions across the nation have this caliber of APP led infrastructure. CAP is focused on supporting and cultivating expertise so that APPs are empowered to provide outstanding and value-focused patient care.

Meet our APP team
The onboarding stage is the process of new APP integration, beginning at the time of new hire offer acceptance and continuing through the first 2 weeks of employment. The content and instruction are generalizable across practice settings. We hold a monthly APP specific new hire orientation.
The orientation stage is a formal process to transition APP into specific role. It overlaps with onboarding and continues for the first 12 weeks of employment. Learning and training is tailored to specific job role.
In an effort to support professional and role development, increase job satisfaction, and provide support to APPs at Stanford Health Care (SHC), the Mentorship Committee, with support from the Center for Advance Practice (CAP), has developed a formal mentorship program.
All newly hired APPs with less than three years of advance practice experience will be automatically enrolled in a two-year mentorship program (APP Mentorship Program). In the first year, the APPs who meet the criteria will gather quarterly for a three-hour interval. These sessions will be led by the CAP leadership team. It will include a didactic experience to promote professional development and a focus group to facilitate sharing experiences with others new to the APP role. In the second year, the APP mentees will be assigned an APP mentor to connect with as an additional resource on our online platform.
The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Ladder is a voluntary clinical leadership and career advancement program designed to recognize and reward professional excellence using our online platform.
The purpose of the Career Ladder is to acknowledge the clinician’s accomplishments in 3 broad areas including:
- Clinical Expertise
- Institutional Citizenship and Leadership
- Contributions to the Profession while demonstrating Stanford Health Care Core Values
All student and school requests should go to graduatestudents@stanfordhealthcare.org. If you accept a student, the school should include your name on the clinical request form.
Easy 4-Step Process!
- Universities send the student’s resume and clinical request form to SHC to a new email address:
graduatestudents@stanfordhealthcare.org. (The student can include your name if you’ve already accepted them!) - The Academic Liaison contacts preceptors based on the student’s desired clinical sites or confirms with the stated preceptor on the form. Potential preceptors evaluate the student based on the student’s resume and experience.
- The first preceptor to accept the student notifies the Academic Liaison.
- The Center for Advanced Practice helps the student complete on-boarding and voila! You have a student!
Educational Opportunities
Professional Excellence Program (PEP)
The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Professional Excellence Program (PEP), also known as PEP Time, is an initiative started by Stanford Health Care to promote and support APP engagement in non-patient care activities. As part of PEP, a specific amount of time known as PEP Time is allocated to APPs within their current work schedule for educational, scholarly, and professional activities outside of clinical duties. PEP aligns with SHC's mission “To Care, To Educate, To Discover."
APP SHINE Scholarship
We are pleased to announce a new scholarship for Advanced Practice Providers at Stanford, called the APP SHINE Scholarship. The scholarship name is to shed light on the meaningful professional work being done by APPs within our organization and remember the SHINE initiative in years to come.
They are travel scholarships of up to $2500 awarded to APPs in support of their presentation of SHC related work at professional conferences.
Visiting Observation Process
If you are seeking an observation-only experience, either as a lay person or as a licensed healthcare professional, you may directly contact the Privacy Assurance team at VisitingObserver@stanfordhealthcare.org. Visiting observations are facilitated by the Privacy Assurance team at Stanford Health Care. If you are interested in hosting an observer, whether that is a current employee, student, or colleague, it is important that you abide by the Privacy team's process to ensure compliance.
NOTE: Prior to applying for the visiting observer process, the observer must already have a host confirmed for their shadowing experience. The Privacy Assurance team will not match observers to hosts.
